Android Oreo 8.0: Top Features

Named after the most popular cookie in the world, Google has launched its new Android operating system, Android Oreo 8.0. The new OS has been rolled out for compatible Nexus and Pixel phones. Google is working with several phone companies to launch Android Oreo 8.0 on their devices (or upgraded to) by the end of the year.

Nokia’s parent company HMD Global has also confirmed that almost all Nokia phones including Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 will get the Oreo upgrade. OnePlus 3 and 3T will get the new OS as the last update, although there has been no confirmation for OnePlus 5 yet.

Here are the new features in Android Oreo 8.0:

  • 2 Times Faster Booting Time: Your phone will now power on up to 2 times faster than what it used to with earlier versions.
  • Less Background Activity in Apps: Fewer location updates, other events in the background, etc. which will save battery life.
  • Auto-fill feature for logins: A built-in password manager will now come with Android Oreo.
  • Picture-in-Picture: This new feature allows you to see two apps at once. For example, you could minimize the video call on the bottom right side and continue reading your email while on the video call.
  • Notifications Dots: The new notification dots allow you to quickly go through notifications and swipe them away.
  • Better Battery Life: Oreo adds functionality to improve the battery life compared to previous versions.
  • Instant Apps enabled by default: This feature came with earlier versions too, but it is enabled by default in Android Oreo 8.0
  • New Settings Screen: A new redesigned and simplified settings screen will come with Oreo.
  • Google Play Protect: The new OS will prevent installation of malicious apps by scanning billions of apps in the play store.
  • Redesigned & 60 New Emoji: A newly redesigned emoji set will come with Oreo including 60 brand new emoji.

Other new features include Adaptive Icons, Accessibility Volume & Button, Ambient Screen, Downloadable Fonts, Integrated Printing Support, Linkable Files, Notification Snoozing, Project Treble, Pointer Capture, Text View Auto-sizing, Tooltips and Wi-Fi Assistant.
